On January 9th, 1915 - just two days before his execution - Bhai Mewa Singh wrote a letter to the community in Stockton. With the help of community researchers and archivists, this letter has been digitized, interpreted, and made accessible to the public for the first time on thenamelesscollective.ca. In this episode, the team discusses the nuances of the letter, some of the indications it gives us about time period, and what it means to hear Mewa Singh's own voice for the first time.

Yours faithfully, Mewa Singh, the servant of all nations, offers the Sikh sect this letter, because I am desirous of leaving to you and your posterity this letter in remembrance of myself.
Your servant, the lowest of the entire sangat, Mewa Singh, is writing this letter to you despite being the most lowly so that you may see into my actions.
ਮੈ ਏਸ ਦੋਨੀਆ ਓਤੋ ਸੁਰਗਵਾਸ਼ ਹੋਣ ਹੈ ਜੀ
ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਰਗਵਾਸ ਹੋਣਾ ਹੈ ਜੀ।
I am destined to ascend to heaven.
I am going to leave this world for the afterlife.
ਏਸ਼ ਕਾਰਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਦਾਰਛਨ ਲਾਈ ਮੈ ਪਾਤਰਕਾਰ ਭੇਜੀ

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾਸੇ ਸੀ ਏਕ ਸਾਟਕਟਣ ਤਾਰੋ ਆਈ ਓ ਭਾਈ ਕੈਹਦੇ ਹੈ ਕੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦਾਸ ਕਿ ਦਿਨ ਸੂਲੀ ਆਨਾ ਹੈ ਜੀ
ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਸਟਾਕਟਣ ਤੋਂ ਤਾਰ ਆਈ। ਉਹ ਭਾਈ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਕਿ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਕਿਸ ਦਿਨ ਸੂਲੀ ਆਉਣਾ ਹੈ ਜੀ।
Mit Singh told me that a teelgram had come from Stockton to find out the date of my execution,
Mitt Singh told me that we received a telegram from Stockton. The brothers there said tell us which day the hanging is going to happen
ਗੁਰੂ ਗੰਰਥ ਸੈਹਬ ਦਾ ਭੁਗ ਪਾਣਾ ਹੈ ਜੀ
ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਭੋਗ ਪੈਣਾ ਹੈ ਜੀ।
because it will be necessary to read the concluding chapter of the "Guru Gurunth Sahib" (Sikh bible).
So they can complete the Paath of the Guru Granth Sahib.
ਸੋ ਮੈ ਏ ਗਾਲ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਬੁਹਤ ਖੁਛੀ ਹੋਆ
ਸੋ ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਏਹ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਬੁਹਤ ਬੁਹਤ ਬੁਹਤ ਬੁਹਤ ਬੁਹਤ ਬੁਹਤ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ।
This news has brought a great gladness to me,
Hearing this I was so, so, so, so, so, so happy.
ਕੇ ਅਨੁਕੁ ਖੁਛੀ ਹੋਆ ਕੇ ਆਉਦਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਨੀਚ ਸਾਰੀਰ ਹੈ ਓਤੁ ਵੀ ਬਾਰ ਹੋਗੇਆ ਕੇ ਦਾਸੁ ਏਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੈ ਜੇਨੂ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਜਾਦੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੀ
ਇੰਨੀਂ 'ਕੁ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਿ ਆਉਣਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਨੀਚ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੈ 'ਤੇ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਵਾਰ ਹੋਗਿਆ। ਦਾਸ ਇੱਕ ਨੀਚ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਯਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੀ।
because I now know that the Sikh sect at Stockton, believe in me. I am only an humble individual, but am so glad, oh, so glad to think that the sect believes in me and remembers me.
I was so happy that the body of this lowly person which comes and goes, is again a sacrifice. The community has remembered this lowly being.
ਦਾਸੁ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਆਤੀ ਧਾਨੁ ਧਾਨੁ ਧਾਨੁ ਧਾਨੁ ਧਾਨੁ ਧਾਨੁਵਾਦਾ ਕਾਰਦਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਾਲਮੁ ਥੁ ਲਿਖ਼ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਕਦਾ ਜੀ
ਦਾਸ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਅਤੀ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਿ ਦਾਸ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਲਮ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਜੀ।
I leave this earth thanking you a thousand times. It is impossible to write my thanks - they are so great.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Your servant’s pen can’t write it enough.
ਦਾਸ ਦੇ ਸੁਰਗੁਵਾਸ ਬੁਹਤ ਖੁਛੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਚਾਲੇਆ ਹੈ ਜੀ
ਦਾਸ ਦੇ ਸੁਰਗਵਾਸ ਹੋਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਚੱਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੀ।
I have committed this act for which I am to leave this earth,
Your servant is so happy to be leaving to the afterlife in this way.
ਐਨੁ ਕੁ ਖੁਛੀ ਕੇ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਹੀ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਹੀ ਜੀ
ਇੰਨੀਂ'ਕੁ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਜੀ।
with the greatest pleasure.
So, so happy.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਵਾਕੁ ਹੈ ਜੀ ਜਾਨਮੁ ਮਾਰਨਾ ਦੋਓੂ ਮੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਨੁੇ ਪਾਰਓਪੁਕਾਰੀ ਆ
ਗੁ੍ਰੂ ਦਾ ਵਾਕ ਹੈ ਜੀ “ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਹਹੂ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਆਏ ॥”
The Guru (Religious teacher) has said "A good man neither dies nor does he return to this earth in his next incarnation, but is sent on earth to do work for others."
The Guru says “Generous, humble beings are above both birth and death.”*
ਅੋਰ ਭਾਈ ਦਵਾਨੁ ਲਾਕੇ ਤੇ ਆ ਸਾਬੁਦੁ ਪਾੜਨਾ ਕਾਹ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਾਡਾਆਈ ਕੋਈ ਨਓ ਨਾ ਜਾਨੇ ਮੈਰਾ
ਔਰ ਭਾਈ ਦੀਵਾਨ ਲਾਕੇ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪੜ੍ਹਣਾ "ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੇਰਾ ॥"
I wish you to call a special meeting and read to all this text of the Guruji's: 'The first Guru said 'all works that I do are directed by God, but as for me, I am nothing.'
All of the brothers should gather and read the shabad “Nanak Ji says, this is all Your greatness; no one even knows my name.”*
ਅੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਾਰਾਵਾ ਖੁਛ ਦੇ ਜਾਗਾਰੇ ਗਾਜਾਨੇ ਜੀ
ਔਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਭ੍ਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਜੈਕਾਰੇ ਗਜਾਉਣੇ ਜੀ।
Let all at the meeting rejoice and clasp their hands.
And all the brothers should gather And shout happy slogans of victory.
ਬਹਤੁ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਬੁਹਤੁ ਖੁਛੀ ਕਾਰਨੀ ਜੀ
ਬਹੁਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਜੀ।
Celebrate so much happiness.
ਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਤਾਗੀਦ ਹੈ ਜੀ ਕਸੇ ਕਾਰਨੇ ਨਰਜ਼ਗੀ ਕਾਰਨੀ
ਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਤਾਗੀਦ ਹੈ ਜੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਨਰਾਜ਼ਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨੀ।
Forgive me for any faults I had.
Your servant urges you not to be unhappy in any way.
ਦਾਸੁ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਡਾਰ ਨ ਰਾਖ਼ਆ ਜੀ
ਦਾਸ ਨੇ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜੀ।
I am not afraid of death.
Your servant doesn’t fear death in any way.
ਸੋ ਕੋਈ ਭਾਈ ਕਾਹ ਕੇ ਓ ਸਾਦੇ ਈ ਸੀ ਜੇੜਾ ਦਾਸ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੈ ਓਤੁ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁ ਕਾਰਗਾ ਓ ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਮਿਤਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੀ
ਸੋ ਕੋਈ ਭਾਈ ਕਹਿ ਕਿ "ਉਹ ਸਾਡਾ ਹੀ ਸੀ" ਜਾਂ ਦਾਸ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਉਹ ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
If any one grieves for my death, he is no friend of mine.
If anyone makes dramatic cries at my death, they are no friend of mine.
ਅੋਰ ਜਾਦੀ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੁ ਦੀ ਫਤੇ ਸੁਰਗਵਾਸ ਦੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫਤੇ ਜੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਗਾਚਕੇ ਬਲਣੀ ਜੀ
ਔਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਫਤੇ ਸੁਰਗਵਾਸ ਦੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫਤਹਿ ਜੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਗੱਜਕੇ ਬੁਲਾਉਣੀ ਜੀ।
I clasp my hands and salute the meeting and say: 'Victory to the Guruji,'
And please accept my last salutation of Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh as I leave and please say it loudly with me.
ਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਤਾਗੀਦ ਹੈ ਜੀ
ਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਤਾਗੀਦ ਹੈ ਜੀ।
Your servant is urging you.
ਅੰਠ ਚਾਗਾਰੈ ਗਚਕੇ ਜਾਗਾਨੇ ਜੀ
ਅੰਤ ਜੈਕਾਰੇ ਗੱਜਕੇ ਗਜਾਉਣੇ ਜੀ।
At the end, shout slogans of victory.
ਅੋਰ ਦੋਵੇ ਹਾਥ ਜੋੜਕੇ ਫਤੇ ਜੀ
ਔਰ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੱਥ ਜੋੜਕੇ ਫਤੇ ਜੀ।
I say Fateh to you with both hands clasped.
ਅੋਰ ਵਾਡਾ ਦਵਾਨ ਲਾਕੇ ਦਾਸੁ ਦੀ ਪਾਤਰਕਾਰ ਸੁਣਣੀ ਜੀ

Call a meeting and let them hear the contents of this letter - don't forget.

ਅੋਰ ਜੇਸੁ ਭਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਸ ਨੇ ਲਾਟਾ ਦੇਤੀਆ ਹੈਨ ਦਾਸ ਨੇ ਓਨੁਏ ਕੇਹਾ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੈਸਾ ਸਰਾ ਪਾਰਓਪੁਕਾਰ ਓਤੁ ਲਾਗੇ ਜੀ
ਔਰ ਜਿਸ ਭਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਸ ਨੇ ਲਾਟਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹੈਂ ਦਾਸ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਆ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੈਸਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਉਤੇ ਲੋਾਵੇ ਜੀ।
My property I have left to help the cause.
And to the brother your servant has left his property, they are instructed to put all of my money to uplifting others.
ਗੁਰੂ ਸੈਹਬੁ ਕੈਹਦੇ ਹੈ ਜੀ ਕੇ ਜੇਸੁ ਧਾਨਨ ਚਾਰ ਕੁਠ ਓਠੁ ਧਾਵੇ ਸੋ ਧਾਨ ਹਾਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਓਤੇ ਪਾਵੇ
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੈ ਜੀ ਕਿ "ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥"
The 'Guru Sahib' says: 'The wealth that men seek can only be obtained on earth by calling on the name of God.
Guru Sahib Ji says, “The wealth which you chase after in all four directions, you shall obtain that wealth by serving the Divine.”
